Singapore Writing Residencies (National and International)

NTU’s Creative Writing Programme is the home of the Singapore Writing Residencies. Supported by a collaboration between NTU and the National Arts Council, Singapore, the residencies  provide for national and international writers with a record of creative excellence to contribute to teaching and mentorship within the creative writing programme, while working on their own literary projects. The residencies are designed to provide support for the creation of new literary works, and to facilitate contact between experienced and new writers. Applicants to the programme may be writers in any literary form, including fiction, poetry, literary non-fiction, playwriting, screenwriting and literary multimedia.

Call for Applications:
Singapore Writing Residency (National) 2012-2013

Applications for the 2012-2013 National residency are now open, and will close on March 2nd. Applicants must hold Singapore citizenship or permanent residency. The chosen candidate will write and assume light teaching duties within the Creative Writing programme at the Division of English for a period of up to one year, beginning in early August 2012.

Duties

1) Writing

During the period of the residency, the writer will be expected to pursue a project or projects in creative writing, as per his or her application to the position. The project(s) may take the form of poetry, fiction, scriptwriting, creative non-fiction, multi-media writing or any other literary form.

NTU and NAC recognize that publication of work developed during the period of the residency may well occur beyond the term of the residency. Accordingly, the writer will be expected

a) to complete a report on progress made during the residency at the end of the term, and

b) to acknowledge the support of the NTU/NAC residency in any book publications of work written during the residency, whether this work is published during or after the residency.

2) Teaching and/or Mentorship

Each appointed writer will be expected

a) to provide 40 contact hours of teaching and/or mentorship for each semester of the period of appointment (or for two semesters, if the appointment is made for a full year), and

b) to provide up to 40 hours per teaching semester of preparation, marking, consultation and administration time, as necessary to facilitate teaching duties.
The nature of the teaching/mentorship duties will be negotiated with the Division of English according to the needs of the Division and the experience of the writer.

3) Readings and Availability

Each appointed writer will be expected

a) to provide one to two readings to the general public per semester, and

b) to hold open-door consultation hours for a minimum of two hours per week of appointment.

Requirements

• The applicant’s publication history should demonstrate a capacity for literary excellence. 

• The applicant must hold Singapore Citizenship or Permanent Residency.

• Applicants must be available to pursue their residency duties full time during the period of the residency.

• Appointment will remain subject to the satisfaction of NTU’s pre-employment requirements, including (for foreign appointees) the issuing of a work pass by Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower.

Provisions

The appointed writer will be paid on the academic salary scale as a regular fulltime faculty member.

In addition, the writer will be provided with
• up to $10 000 SGD in additional research funding
• an office within the Division of English at NTU
• full library access, and
• the administrative support offered to regular faculty members.
