Graduate Study
Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy
Students with substantial creative writing experience may be eligible to undertake a Master of Arts or a PhD in English Literature, with a creative writing specialization. These degrees may also be suitable for practicing writers who wish to focus on their literary development in a structured and supportive environment, while gaining a professional qualification. All applicants must fulfill the entry requirements for graduate study in English Literature.
A graduate degree with a creative writing focus allows the student to develop a creative project as the thesis component of their degree. Creative projects may be undertaken in fiction, poetry, scriptwriting, creative non-fiction or multi-media writing, subject to available supervision. The creative project must include an exegesis comprising 25% of the total word count. The exegesis will describe the project’s aims within a creative and critical context.
